How to Find Oil Rig Positions
Many people tend to scour the job boards like Monster or Hot Jobs, which is fine, but most oil companies do not advertise there. You will want to do an Internet search on your own by maximizing Google, Bing or Yahoo! to your advantage. Simply type in a phrase such as "oil rig jobs" or "current jobs oil" and let the Internet do the walking. You can also check the oil company websites for current openings. Find someone in the business already, perhaps they have some pointers or know of some up and coming positions that are not even posted yet.
What to Have Beforehand
When working on an offshore oilrig, depending on the position you are seeking, you may require certifications. Also, since the rigs are worldwide, you will need to have your immunizations completed. It's always best to read up on maritime law, as these laws govern the rig. The host country also rules over the offshore site, so do not bring any alcohol or drugs onboard.
Phone calls from sea to shore can be quite expensive, so you may wish to purchase some phone cards. Many cell phones do not work on the water either. Make sure you have all of your home life sorted before arriving, as oil work will have you on the rig for months on end. Bring enough toiletry items with you since there are no shops at sea.
Types of Oil Work Positions
Despite the world turning to renewable energy sources, there is a wide array of vacancies in the oil industry. The Benefits
Since you will be working a 14/21 shift (14 days on, 21 off) and the sea is your home, the offshore rigs provide you with room and board, meals, and laundry facilities. Some facilities are similar to a five-star hotel in service to the employees. Insurance is available, as well as profit sharing. You can almost always advance to a higher position. You do not necessarily have to have experience, as training may be provided.
Whatever your skill or desire, you can more than likely find an opening in oil work. The oilrigs have several openings across the world. The invitation has been served, now it's up to you to apply.
