The Real, Startling Truth About Many People Out of Work (Will This Shock You?)

The truth is, many people enjoy not working or having to go to a job. Oh yes I know. When you got the pink slip, or you were informed of the layoffs, chances are you experienced a flush of fear. But that fear was not about being out of work. It was a fear about how to pay the bills, keep the house and have cash flow. The being out-of-work part can be fun.

Proof of this truth: show me the last person you met who didn't look forward to a vacation or think about ways to take a day off from work occasionally. Most people do not enjoy their work. As a result, it is easy, unconsciously, to do things that sustain unemployment. Here is a suggestion to help you get back to work at a job or work you will enjoy. Try this exercise.

You will need three blank sheets of paper for this exercise. I. At the top of the first sheet, write: "High Experience." Using as much of the rest of the page as you need, detail high experiences you've had from any area of your life. A high experience is an activity that gave you a sense of personal achievement. It's an experience that felt valuable to you because it made good use of your skills and abilities. The activity does not have to have been profound. What matters is that inside you felt effective and you enjoyed the process.

II. At the top of the second sheet of paper write: "What I Did." Again, using the rest of the paper detail what you were doing during this high experience. This includes such things as what you may have said to others or skills you used to make things happen. Maybe it was a sales experience or something you made with your hands. Maybe the high experience occurred out of doors, hunting or camping or sailing.

Try to remember the details of your behavior or actions and categorize those into skills or traits. A skill is something a person does or something they know that gets a task done. Usually these are things that can be learned. A trait is something about the person that enables them to use the skill. For example, good eye/hand coordination is a trait that can develop skills necessary for woodworking.

III. Using the third sheet of paper, right at the top: "Results." Now list the outcomes or the things that were produced by you during the high experience. It may be that a piece of furniture was the result of this high experience. It may be that you made a significant sale, which helps your company as well as your own bottom line. The results of your high experience may have been a speech you gave, which later was used in a PowerPoint presentation for your company. Often there are several results that come out of a person's high experience. Be sure to note them all.

Perhaps in the process of doing this exercise, you have remembered other high or peak experiences in your life. If so, process each of them according to the format detailed above.

When you're finished, think about what kind of work or jobs could use the skills and traits you demonstrated in your high experience(s). Do not let yourself eliminate possible jobs or careers that could give you peak experiences because you don't think that work would produce enough income for you. The first step is to get clear on what you would enjoy doing that you would call a "job or work". The second step will be to start looking for that kind of work in your job hunt.

Once you've identified the job you will enjoy, there are many ways to make the money match your needs. Your job right now is to get clear about what kind of jobs you will enjoy doing. As a result, you will be separated from the mass of people who do not like their work and unknowingly welcome unemployment.
