Former city employee arrested for stealing scrap metal
a former city of albuquerque engineer is in police custody--accused of selling some of the city's scrap metal .....and pocketing more than thirty thousand dollars. andrew gallegos -- who now works for the state -- is facing felony charges... and not only that, the city plans on suing him for that money. jeremy jojola is live downtown with tonight's top story. for nearly three years -- the city says one of its own sold its scrap metal -- and got recycling companies to pay him personally. andrew gallegos used to work for the traffic engineering department until he resigned last year. he supervised workers who installed traffic lights and signs. according to police---gallegos had recycling companies pick up city scrap metal at the city's pino yards---and pay him personally. according to investigators, those companies were under the impression they were paying the city through him. but after an anonymous tip came into the city---his bank account was looked at by city auditors---they found he had 24 four checks written out to him by these companies---for a total of 37- thousand dollars. "this was very clear, we had checks made out to the individual from this company. the companies cooperated. i think this was a really good report.. really good work done here." gallegos was arrested at his new job---at the state's department of transportation offices right off of i-25. a department spokesperson could not say what the status of his employment is as of this moment. but not only ...
